The Minorities of the Middle East should stay in their homeland

Well, it seems that the long expected clash of civilizations seems is just being unfolded before our eyes! For a century the Christians of the Middle East have been shrinking in terms of population and geography due to various events, e.g. the genocide of Armenians, Greeks and Assyro-Chaldaeans by the Young Turks, the exile of Christians, especially Muslims in occupied Palestine by Israel etc. Today in Syria and Iraq, the fate and future of Christianity, the Yezidis and other minority religions are put into question the actions by the Sunni Islamic Wahabis (wrongly termed “jihadists” by international media) of the Islamic State, otherwise Caliphate. The ongoing persecution of Christians, the Yezidis, the Shiites and the Kurds reveal the inability of the governments of these areas to protect their citizens. It is a clear manifestation of cultural conflict between East and West with the existing extremism constituting only skirmishes in a war that has just begun.
In this context it is crucial for minorities to remain in their homeland in order to ensure the continuity of their presence as a vital sign of cultural diversity and tolerance. The initiative of the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to invite Christians of Iraq to emigrate to France is undoubtedly an act of humanity and should both be applauded. However, this act sets a precedent in view of depopulating the Middle East of its minorities; thus the French initiative could be amended. The invited guests must have a temporary presence in Europe until the restoration of security and geopolitical stability of Iraq and the region. As for other minority populations in Iraq, the international community should praise the Iraqi government for accommodating and protecting Christians and Yezidis in the Shiite and Kurdish provinces of Iraq. The international community needs also to support the Iraqi government in this project by providing resources and expertise to establish immigration centers as temporary residence in the above districts. Thus they can keep the minorities in the natural and cultural environment ensuring cultural continuity in space and time.
If the international community does not cooperate politically with the governments of the Middle Eastern for the active and effective protection of minorities in these countries, then this war will be long with an unpredictable outcome. If the international community does not create a fund aiming to implement this initiative, it will be the first time in two thousand years that Christianity and other religions could be eradicated terms of numbers from the geographical and cultural context that gave birth to them. And if that happens, then we will talk about the creation of a new, this time cultural, war between Islam and the West. Then the Middle East would lose its multiculturalism and would acquire a cultural worldview of lack of tolerance leading eventually to the full clash of civilizations.

ISIL militants at an undisclosed location in Iraq

About “Jihadists”

Dr. Evangelos Venetis
Head of the Middle East Research Project

The deteriorating security in Iraq because of the Sunni Wahabbis of the Islamic State is an unexpected phenomenon in terms of its rapid spread. The atrocities against Christians, the Yezidis and Shiite Muslims in Iraq are similar to those occurring in neighboring Syria. The power vacuum in the region does not allow the governments of these countries to protect minorities and the indifferent ... West is interested only in words. Meanwhile the "jihadists" act freely. Given that the term does not exist in the history of Islam, the question arises: Is it right to call them "jihadists"?
First they are not "jihadists" but Sunni-Mujahideen-fighters for the faith-Wahhabi Islamists. These are the correct terms that characterize Sunni fighters in Iraq. The term "jihadist" is wrong. And we elaborate: Linguistically it is a transatlantic and European imperial neologism of the media and some researchers; it does not adequately reflect the content and way of thinking of the Sunni Islamists. Etymologically it derives from the term "Jihad" [= effort (in the path of God), holy war "]. However, the term "jihadist" is not found in the vocabulary of any western language, or even Arabic.
The ambiguity and misunderstanding of the term "jihadist" has a conceptual dimension. If we accept that it is used as a term synonymous with the aforementioned, then the question arises: if those representing the Islamic State in Mesopotamia are Jihadists, then who are the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the Islamists in Yemen and Africa? Of course these are the same branch of radical Sunni Islam without any doctrinal difference. So it is wrong to differentiate the name of Sunni Islamists in Iraq, Syria and the rest of the world.
Furthermore, given that in political Islam Jihad is a common concept in political and moral practice of Sunni and the Shiite Muslims; for example, is not Hezbollah in Lebanon "jihadist"? So why should we use the term improperly only about radical Sunni Islam?

Hence the wrong use of the term "Jihadists" by the international and domestic media and part of the research community contributes to further confusion in the mind of the average man in the West about Islam and about the developments in the Islamic world. With this in mind, it is right to avoid the use of the term "jihadists" for the Islamists and the terms "Mujahid(in)" or "fighter for the faith 'and to clear up the case for Sunni Islamist or Shiite. Hence this linguistic preciseness helps us to have a clearer perception of what is happening in Islam.

Silence constitutes complicity in Gaza
Dr. Evangelos Venetis

Kathimerini, 02/08/2014

International law is violated openly and systematically in Gaza. The thousands of dead and injured Palestinian civilians manifest clearly that the Israeli attack on Hamas artillery is disproportionate. There is no international law prescribing that the right to safety can justify the occupation and slaughter of innocent civilians. The Israeli strategy in Gaza acts against the prospect of peace and the integrity and existence of the Palestinian people. Additionally there can not be a collective punishment of a people due to the policy of their government.
While Israel itself trying to maintain his own safety in a hostile environment, it is doomed to be a militarized state due to its policy in Palestine. The ground invasion of Israel in Gaza is fruitless and annuls the leading and realistic Sharon policy, returning to an ineffective past policy. Also Israel's policy in Gaza leaves exposed and vulnerable Mahmoud Abbas within the political arena of the Palestinians in the West Bank, jeopardizing its stability.

Greece with its special relationship with both Palestine-Muslim world and Israel needs to act fast and help break the deadlock in the context of international community. Greece needs to justify its special position in the world map of people who fought and fight for independence and human dignity. The Greek government should take the initiative in both the EU and the UN and regional bilateral level to raise awareness in the largely indifferent international community and stop the ongoing heinous crime. The mobilization of international justice remains a desideratum at this time. Undoubtedly silence is complicity.

The Fall of the West in Mesopotamia

The Fall of the West in Mesopotamia: Repeating Mistakes in Syria and Iraq

Dr. Evangelos Venetis
Head of the ELIAMEP Middle East Research Project

The current situation in Iraq is not surprising. It was foreseen in the August 2013 article in the Kathimerini titled 'Mesopotamia is after the Mantle of the Prophet," highlighting the geopolitical instability in Iraq despite that the international and Greek media were dealing with Syria, where (the latter) was not concerned with the economic crisis in Greece. Iraq was a “simmering volcano.”
Today Iraq is destabilized because of the repeatedly frivolous and unrealistic foreign policy decisions of the U.S. and Britain in 2003 (the US-British invasion of Iraq and fall of Saddam Hussein) that unleashed the forces of destabilization of Al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia. Similarly, the persistence of the West on the issue of Syria in the last three years to oust the Assad leadership of the country is repeating the same tragic error of 2003 in Iraq. The operational skill and influential Sunni Wahhabis in Iraq today have was consolidated in Syria and the experience gained against Assad. The West desperately wanders without knowledge of developments in the region: On the one hand it supports the Wahhabi Sunnis in Syria and on the other they are its enemies in Iraq.
The severity of the situation in Iraq is illustrated by the fatwa of the Shiite Grand Ayatollah Sistani urging Shiites to fight against the Wahhabis. When the elder Sistani and the so-called apolitical one of the Shiite clergy, made such a statement, it is easy to understand the magnitude of the war in Iraq. Yes, the West needs to understand that Iraq is now at war not in a crisis. The main challenge now is securing the unity of Iraq whilst the trisection of the country seems to be closer than ever.
The attitude of the West in Iraq should be figured out in connection with its policy in Syria and its stance to Assad. The West is challenged to choose allies in the region. The western policy of instability cannot but destabilize the Middle Eastern countries one after the other. No doubt the destabilization of Iraq and Syria comes from the Arab Peninsula, a U.S. ally in the region. If the West does not establish a realistic policy in the region immediately, then the power vacuum will be filled by regional powers both Sunnis and Shiites. But then it will be too late for the West and for Greece with Iraqi refugees arriving on the doorsteps of Europe...

Taliban and the West

The Message of Taliban to the West: Diplomacy Presupposes Reciprocity

Dr. Evangelos Venetis
Head of the ELIAMEP Middle East Research Project

The recent attack by the Taliban against the International Airport of Karachi is an important event in the war that rages between the Taliban and the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan. In fact the attack in Karachi is linked to the attack in Kabul three days ago against Abdullah Abdullah, the future president of Afghanistan based on the elections polls until now. However, given the good climate that was created on June 4 as a result of the exchange of the American sergeant and five Taliban prisoners in Guantanamo, the question is what has changed in the meantime.
According to the announcement of the Taliban, the spectacular attack in Karachi was in response to the bombing of villages adjacent to the Taliban. Obviously the loss of important Taliban executives by airstrikes in the highlands of the country, despite the exchange of June 4 and effort split the Taliban from the West, is an important cause for the attack in Karachi. What is their message? They are able to carry out large-scale strikes suddenly and in unsuspected places. In other words, the security of Pakistan is at stake.
Now if after this flick and switch emotions within five days diplomacy is able to offer something essential is doubtful. Sure it must be considered that the war between the West and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan will be exacerbated by the withdrawal of American troops at the end of the year from Afghanistan. When there is no trust, diplomacy is unsuccessful. Trust is built upon the spirit of reciprocity and not that of superiority.
